Tom Curran aiming to follow his father into paid ranks

By Charles Randall

Tom Curran took a step towards following his late father Kevin into professional cricket after he was selected for the Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy intake at Guildford for 2013.

Curran, 17, an all-rounder, caught the attention of the Surrey scouting programme in South Africa and he moved to England to attend Wellington College, making his Surrey 2nd XI debut in 2012. Kevin Curran collapsed and died last October at the age of 53 while jogging in the Zimbabwean town of Mutare.

Dominic Sibley remains Surrey's big prospect after his precocious start in adult cricket. At the age of 15 he scored 200 off 218 balls for Ashtead against Weybridge in the Ryman Surrey Championship in 2011, and this winter he hit a century for England Under-19 against South Africa at Paarl.

Normandy CC will not be surprised that Oli Batchelor, 16, will be part of the Surrey Academy as he scored 61 on his debut against Banstead in the Ryman Surrey Championship last season. The opener had already built a big reputation in county age-group cricket, hitting 175 for the Surrey Under-17 against Essex in 2012. His Normandy colleague Chris Jones, an off-spinner, is another 'local' academy recruit from the Guildford-based club..

Michael Cousens excelled as a batsman at Harrow School, and Ryan Patel, an all-rounder from Rutlish School, has been fast-tracked at the age of 14.
